“MULA sa Dan hanggang sa Beer-sheba.” Iyan ay isang pamilyar na parirala sa mga mambabasa ng Bibliya. Inilalarawan niyan ang buong Israel, mula sa Dan, malapit sa hilagang hangganan, hanggang sa Beer-sheba, sa timog. Ang kapayapaan ng paghahari ni Solomon ay inilarawan na ganito: “Ang Juda at ang Israel ay patuloy na nagsitahang tiwasay, bawat tao’y sa ilalim ng kaniyang punong ubas at sa ilalim ng kaniyang punong igos, mula sa Dan hanggang sa Beer-sheba, lahat ng mga araw ni Solomon.”​—1 Hari 4:25; Hukom 20:1.

Subalit, ang mga pagkakaiba ng Dan at ng Beer-sheba ay hindi lamang ang kanilang distansiya sa isa’t isa. Saan kinuha ni Abraham ang tubig upang punuin ang bangang-balat ni Hagar? Marahil ay sa balon na kaniyang hinukay, na malapit doon ay tinamnan niya ng punong tamarisk. Kung dadalaw ka sa Punso ng Beer-sheba, makakatanaw ka sa ibaba ng isang malalim na balon sa timog-silangang dalisdis. Walang nakakaalam kung kailan ito hinukay mula sa matigas na batuhan at ang gawing itaas nito (nakikita sa ibaba) ay pinatibay sa pamamagitan ng mga bato. Inalis ng modernong mga arkeologo ang mga nakabara rito sa lalim na 30 metro pababa nang hindi naaabot ang ilalim. Isa sa kanila ang may ganitong napansin: “Nakatutuksong sabihin na ang balong ito ay . . . ang ‘Balon ng Sumpa’ na kung saan ginawa nina Abraham at Abimelech ang kanilang tipan.”​—Biblical Archaeology Review.

Maliwanag na ang Beer-sheba ay lumawak nang bandang huli na noong panahon ng Bibliya, naging isang nakukutaang lunsod na may malaking pintuang-bayan. Subalit ang isang susi sa pag-iral at tagumpay nito ay ang mahalagang tubig sa malalim na balon nito.
